This baked apple fritters recipe is made with a blend of all-purpose and whole wheat flour, brown sugar, and warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. Chopped apples add a fresh, fruity texture to these healthier fritters. They're baked, not fried, for a lighter treat and drizzled with a sweet vanilla glaze. Perfect for breakfast or dessert!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3/4 Cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 Cup white whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 Cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 6 Tablespoons cold butter, cut into pieces
  • 1/2 Cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 Cup chopped apple
  • For the glaze:
    • 1 Cup confectioner’s sugar
    • 2 Tablespoons milk
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a muffin tin or baking sheet.
  • In a bowl, mix the flours, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt.
  • Cut the cold butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk the milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Pour the wet ingredients into the flour mixture, stirring just until combined.
  • Fold in the chopped apple.
  • Scoop batter into the prepared baking sheet or muffin tin. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  • While fritters are baking, prepare the glaze by whisking together the confectioner’s sugar, milk, and vanilla extract.
  • Drizzle the glaze over warm fritters before serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute apples with pears for a different twist.
  • Serve warm for the best flavor.
  • For extra crispness, broil the fritters for the last 2 minutes of baking.
