Ingredients

  • 4 slices rye or sourdough bread
  • 2 beef patties
  • 4 slices cheese (Swiss, cheddar, or American)
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: mustard, pickles, or sauce of choice

Instructions

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook the beef patties until done, seasoning with salt and pepper.
  • In another skillet, sauté onions in butter until caramelized.
  • Butter one side of each bread slice. Place a slice butter-side down in a pan, layer cheese, a cooked patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese. Top with another slice of bread, butter-side up.
  • Grill each sandwich until golden brown on both sides and the cheese is melted.
